LU-CIX asbl, Luxembourg’s commercial internet exchange point, held its annual general meeting on 24 June 2014. An opportunity to stock of the past twelve months and look ahead to the challenges to come.

The venue for the association’s 2014 AGM was the POST Telecom headquarters on Cloche d’Or. Each year, the meeting is an opportunity for the LU-CIX team to assess how the internet exchange point has progressed over the past year and to present these results to a majority of its members.

Report of a dream

The President of LU-CIX Marco Houwen (photo) opened the meeting by extending a warm welcome to all attendees, with a brief opening speech congratulating LU-CIX members and decision-makers on making 2013 another extremely successful year for the association. , I think we should all be proud of what LU-CIX has become! We can take pride in having been able to make the dream we started with this project five years ago a reality, and more. LU-CIX is continuing to grow, as we hoped it would back in 2009 when the context and prospects for ICT development were still very different…’

As in previous years it was LU-CIX asbl Secretary Claude Demuth who presented the 2013 annual report, which bore testimony to the many challenges LU-CIX has overcome and to the success of the association whose membership is increasing steadily, driven by Luxembourg’s ICT-friendly environment.

  • LU-CIX currently has 57 members, up from 50 a year ago, including JOIN Experience. LU-CIX membership would make perfect sense and we were extremely happy that we were able to join the association so quickly.
  • LU-CIX strengthened its partnership with ECIX, the second largest German exchange point. LU-CIX members who already had access to ECIX’ PoP (Point of Presence) in Düsseldorf have been able to connect to ECIX’ Frankfurt PoP as part of their ECIX connection contract at no extra cost since March 2014.

LU-CIX planned Future

LU-CIX is planning to launch a resale scheme in autumn to enable operators to connect to LU-CIX using the network of a LU-CIX member – the ‘reseller’ – regardless of size and geographical origin. This new initiative will further increase and diversify membership of the Luxembourg exchange and will generate additional traffic.

Luxembourg Internet Days : Frédérique Ulrich, Business Development Manager and event manager and coordinator presented the next not-to-be-missed event organized by LU-CIX and scheduled to take place at the end of this year. The ICT get-together will introduce a new concept for the association’s forthcoming annual events. Luxembourg Internet Days will bring together internet experts from the Greater Region in one venue, over two days, for three events: “luxembourg-gaming.com” on 17 November and “luxembourg-security.com” and “luxembourg-datacenters.com”, both on 18 November. The event schedule is brimming with targeted high-level conferences, fast and snappy pitching sessions, speed-dating slots and networking opportunities that offer new perspectives on specific sectors and markets such as e-business, online gaming, cyber-security and data centres.
The target audience ranges from ICT professionals, engineers and tech experts to SMEs, international companies, decision-makers, financial institutions and public sector representatives. Participants can register on the event website www.luxembourg-internet-days.com.

The general assembly paints an encouraging picture

The 2013 LU-CIX accounts show a growth in activity and are in balance. The AGM therefore discharged the Executive Committee for 2013 and the Bureau remains unchanged: Marco Houwen and Claude Demuth remain LU-CIX asbl President and Secretary, respectively.

To conclude the meeting Andrew Bond, head of IP engineering at NTT Communications took the floor to set out the vision and the challenges for “Software Defined Networking: A Real-World Evaluation”.
